SEO as a Marketing Strategy

I’m going to let you in on a little secret about myself. Here goes: I used to consult for an SEO firm. What does that mean? Well, it means that I used to cold call and try to get business owners to see how SEO could benefit their businesses.

It was a brutal, BRUTAL gig but I learned lots from doing it. The main thing that I learned was just how hopelessly clueless most people were when it came to marketing their business online. People I talked to usually landed in one of three categories:

1) WTF is SEO? (I don’t get it)
2) We tried SEO once and we got ripped off! You guys are all some slimy snake oil salesmen and I hope you DIE!
3) I want to get on the first page of Google TODAY!

I want to address each one of these because SEO is indeed important to your business. It should absolutely be incorporated to your online marketing mix. Over the long term it is one of the best ways to drive targeted traffic to you site.
Number 1 is funny because that response is more common than you think. Almost every business has a website but not all businesses have an understanding of how the search engines work to get your site found. Let me shed some light. (if you don’t know, now you know.)

SEO is short for search engine optimization. It is the process of creating or altering a website with the express purpose of driving quality traffic back to that site. These days search engines are most concerned with getting users results that are most useful to their search queries.

Por ejemplo, if you are doing a search on Google for an auto repair shop in Pasadena, you want results that will direct you to…auto repair shops in Pasadena. If the results are for anything else then you feel you have wasted your time. This is why the search engines want to give you the most relevant results. But on the flip side of things, lets say you are an auto repair shop in Pasadena. Wouldn’t it be of value to you to make sure that your website met Google’s standards so that you would rank highly on their search engine results page (SERP)? The answer is yes. Hell yes. SEO really deals with two main areas: link-building and relevant content. (hmmm…might be topics of later posts…)

Number 2 is also funny to me. (yea, I have a weird sense of humor, so what?) Its hard to argue with experience. Its also very true that there are some bad apples out there who have tarnished the name of SEO and made it more difficult for all the excellent SEOs out there to get gigs. But such is life. I have good news and bad news for you. The good news is that you can do SEO on your own. The bad news is that it can be an mundane, time consuming task at best. Probably best left for the competent pros. Just make sure when you evaluate firms that you are asking the right questions. But if you must do it yourself, make sure that you listen to competent sources of information.

Lastly are my peeps who are extremely thirsty to get themselves to the top of the search engines, immediately. News flash: SEO is NOT a magic wand. Let me say that again in a different way. SEO takes TIME! (at least legal, non penalty inducing SEO takes time). It takes time to build quality links up organically. It takes time for the search engines to crawl your site and for you to establish a high page rank. You must have patience in utilizing SEO as a strategy. If your site’s architecture is on point then you will reap the benefits and drive highly targeted traffic back to your site on a long term basis.
